Hell Is Other People

chrisdamaddog One of the most thoughtful lyricists playing ska music (albeit not as often as I'd like) out there. Brutally honest, unapologetic and inspirational. Someone who comes at music from pretty much the opposite direction from how i do/did (lyric centric vs melody centric), and has expanded my horizons, for which I will always be grateful. We may not always agree, but I'm glad to consider Matt a friend. Favorite track: Homophobin'.

Know that nobody else in the world will take care of you They won’t be there for you, you’re on your own They will all have opinions they’re happy to share with you Find you unbearable, but you should know They can make up a hell but can’t make you believe in it They might call you a sinner with their best of intentions But their definitions are only for them No, you’re not obligated to observe their traditions I’m not for religions, not now and not then They can make up a hell but can’t make you believe in it Treat yourself to a helping of love and forgiveness Be sure to extend this to haters at large They will dehumanize you, but myths have their limits You don’t need to accept this as all that you are They can make up a hell but can’t make you believe in it

Double Agent 02:43
Take a look around the room Would it be safe to assume That since everybody looks like you They think exactly as you do You’re always sure to tell your jokes So far away from them colored folks Because if they heard it then they’d know The things you say behind closed doors Well I hate to ruin your fun But I rat on everyone I keep track of names and places And tell all your black coworkers That you’re a racist Take a look around the room Would it be safe to assume That since everybody looks like you They fuck exactly like you do Any doubts have been dismissed Cuz no one here talks with a lisp Yeah, no one is a stylist Or has that little floppy wrist Well I hate to ruin your fun But I remember everyone And I wonder if you’d hate me If I just stood up and Made you fuckers face me Well there’s nowhere to hide Can’t get away from prying eyes The double agents and the spies They’re lurking all around you They’re learning all about you Take a look around the room Would it be safe to assume That since everybody looks like you They’re just as ignorant, too They’re just as ignorant, too They’re just like ignorant you

Homophobin' 02:39
This is a gathering of people Nothing more and nothing less Just a messy microcosm Of a much more massive mess I need to take the time to remind myself To not expect so much From these edgy angry independent Idiotic drunks Lower your standards We all pretend like we are better Than society at large While we embody all the ills Found in the men who are in charge We can rail against intolerance And homophobe attacks Say we idolize Fugazi When we’d rather Be Like Max I’m disappointed A ska-punk song won’t ever change the world But I could tell you about a couple that made me Believe that we could play songs beautifully And stomp out hatred dutifully We used to talk about unity We used to talk about unity But it seems that that was nothing but a slogan Believe me, I’m all for forgiveness But you can’t make me forget this homophobin’

Throwaway 03:24
You gotta go, you gotta leave You gotta adios, arrivederci I don’t wanna see you again Because we’re trying to be happy And you’re acting kinda crappy Always picking fights with me and my friends And if you’re looking for attention That is anything but negative You better look in some other place Because the way that you’re behaving And the shit that you’re saying Make me want to put a fist in your face You gotta go, you gotta go away You’re welcome here no more You gotta go, you gotta go away We’re showing you the door You gotta go, you gotta go away And please don’t ask what for You’re nothing but a throwaway So why don’t you just go away Well we just want a little peace And you’re a dog off its leash Trying to chew on every ankle around But know that in another minute We will rub your nose in it Because you took a giant shit on the ground You only inconvenience everyone You’re presence isn’t ever fun I think it’s time that we put you down And I know it doesn’t phase ya But I think euthanasia Is the only thing that’s left for you now You gotta go, you gotta go away You’re welcome here no more You gotta go, you gotta go away We’re showing you the door You gotta go, you gotta go away And please don’t ask what for You’re nothing but a throwaway So why don’t you just go away You got a lot of nerve trying to stay around here With folks who don’t deserve someone so insincere Now it’s time to disappear You gotta go, you gotta go away You’re welcome here no more You gotta go, you gotta go away We’re showing you the door You gotta go, you gotta go away And please don’t ask what for You’re nothing but a throwaway So why don’t you just go away Go fuck yourself You’re welcome here no more Go fuck yourself We’re showing you the door Go fuck yourself And please don’t ask what for You’re nothing but a throwaway So why don’t you just go away

about

I was working on a solo ska punk album, consisting of new songs and old songs. I didn't get very far into it, though, before getting sidetracked and losing the motivation. So here are the four songs I completed, recorded in December 2017. There would have been more variety but it just so happens that the songs I recorded first are all about people I don't enjoy being around. The older songs deserved better arrangements and I don't feel bad about giving you the same song twice. Maybe one day I'll put the whole thing together, but I'd rather have these out there in the meantime than nothing at all.
