about
I wrote this song in 2016 but it didn't feel like it fit with anything else I was doing at the time. But you know what? I like this song. It's about being a small part of the random universe and about the relative ignorance of humankind.
lyrics
The surgeon can't feel the broken limb she's mending
Like the pill can't feel the pain that it relieves
But the rational among us keep pretending
That objectivity can be achieved
And the scientists would all like to convince us
That they know exactly how we will behave
But they don't admit the odds are stacked against us
And they pile up like dirt onto a grave
You can make money with your best guesses
Estimate better than the masses
Be the top among your peers
But the only thing that ever matters
Is we are unimportant splatters
Eventual over the years
A stranger says hello to you in public
And you give a smile just to be polite
But you didn't recognize your distant cousin
Separated in the supernova light
Now some molecules collude to make assumptions
But they only have themselves as reference points
And society keeps spinning in disjunction
All egotistical and paranoid
You can make money with your best guesses
Estimate better than the masses
Be the top among your peers
But the only thing that ever matters
Is we are unimportant splatters
Eventual over the years
And it makes no difference, I'll disappear and so will you
And it makes no difference, and everyone we thought we knew
And it makes no difference, a billion ships pass in the night
And it makes no difference, but you'll smile wide and say you tried
You can make money with your best guesses
Estimate better than the masses
Be the top among your peers
But the only thing that ever matters
Is we are unimportant splatters
Eventual over the years
